The Level 4 CET qualification is designed to enable you to:

  • Integrate the theory and practice of teaching
  • Reflect on your own previous/current experience, practice and skills and areas for development
  • Identify the principles of learning, teaching, assessment and evaluation
  • Develop communication and inter-personal skills.
  • Develop an awareness of your professional role and responsibilities.

To enrol on the Certificate in Education and Training (CET) course you will need to have:

  • Award in Education and Training (AET) / PTLLS or an equivalent basic teaching qualification.
  • Real candidates of you own who you will be teaching. You will need to amass at least 30 hours of recorded teaching, this can be during or after the course (your tutor will visit after the course to observe you teaching for at least three of these hours).
  • Qualification/s or experience in your subject area.
  • Reading and writing skills in order to complete your assignments.

Training Course Content.

The course gives you 36 credits and is recognised by Ofqual. The course content includes five main units, four of these are mandatory :

  • Delivering lifelong learning
  • Assessing learners in education and training
  • Planning to meet the needs of your learners
  • Using resources for education and training

You will then complete one optional unit to finalise your work and gain the qualification. You will be taught and guided by our team of expert teacher-trainers who are all lifelong educationalists and dedicated to ensuring that you qualify.

How will I be assessed?

You will be allocated a dedicated tutor who will assess your work. To progress you will complete various assignments, both theoretical and practical. Your tutor will check your work, they will also provide advice, support and guidance to you to help you achieve the standard required. There is no formal exam, however one of the requirements is that you are observed by your assessor teaching your own candidates for at least three hours. We'll arrange this with you on a one to one basis to suit your schedule.

CET training course – background

This CET qualification has replaced the City and Guilds Certificate. Certificate in Teaching in Lifelong Learning (CTLLS) and is now part of a minimum requirement if you wish to teach in post-16 education (i.e. adult education).

What’s next?

The CET qualification will give you a better chance in the job market and can lead you to the Diploma-level DET/DTLLS course and gain fully Qualified Teacher status (QTLS).
You might also progress onto and Assessor qualification.

Introduction to the course

This course is is the first year of the two-year Diploma in Education and Training, run in partnership with Canterbury Christ Church University. In 2014, the provision was graded by Ofsted as outstanding. This programme meets the current government standards related to teacher education and is suitable for teachers working in Further or Adult and Community Education, as well as trainers in the public and private sector.

In the first year of the Diploma, you will gain practical teaching skills and an overview of the theory related to teaching. You will identify the principles of learning, teaching, assessment and evaluation and develop an awareness of your professional role and responsibilities. The course will also focus on developing learning materials, managing the learning environment and enable you to become familiar with current approaches to delivering your specialist subject.

What do I need?

You must be qualified to Level 3 or 4 as applicable within the specialist subject you wish to teach and also have good written and spoken English, and be IT literate (Level 2). You need to be in a position to complete 30 hours of teaching practice.

How is the course taught?

A wide range of teaching methods are used to meet your learning requirements, including lectures, group activities, workshop, tutorials and sessions in assignment writing.

How will I be assessed?

You will be continuously assessed throughout the course. Assessment is via submission of written and other programme task evidence and through practical teaching observations. Assignments will provide evidence through assessment criteria for the satisfactory achievement of identified professional standards. Assessment is subject to external verification.

What does it lead to?

Progress onto the second year of Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training (DET) or Specialist Diplomas in Teaching English, Maths or Disabilities
