Introduction

Entries are hereby invited for the 2012 edition of the Glorious Islamic Centre Annual Essay Competition. This is a great chance to do what you love doing – writing – and still get fantastic prizes for it. And hear this: this contest fetched me an iPad2 in 2011.

Categories

The 2012 Glorious Islamic Centre Essay Competition is divided into three categories.

1. The essay title is “Zakaat, Sadaaqah & Income Tax: Discuss.”

2. Students in tertiary institutions are eligible to enter. They must be registered for the current 2012-2013 academic session and must provide documentary evidence of this.

3. Students must be no more than 25 years of age by 31 December 2012 and must enclose a photo ID copy of their birth certificate to confirm this.

4. Postgraduate students are ineligible to enter.

5. Essay must be no more than 2000 words long with a minimum of 1500 words.

6. Entrants must compose an original essay.

1. The essay title is “Iman & Modern Day Challenges.”

2. Students in JS1 – SS3 (Year 7 – 12) in Secondary Schools are eligible to enter. They must be registered for the current 2012-2013 academic session and must provide documentary evidence of this.

3. Students must be no more than 18 years of age by 31 December 2012 and must enclose a photo ID copy of their birth certificate to confirm this.

4. Essay must be no more than 600 words long.

5. Contestants must compose an original essay with limited guidance from adults and teachers

Primary School level

1. The essay title is “The Benefits of Ramadan.”

2. Students in Primary 1-6 (Year 1-6) in primary schools are eligible to enter. They must be registered for the current 2012-2013 academic session and must provide documentary evidence of this.

3. Students must be no more than 12 years of age by 31 December 2012 and must enclose a photo ID or copy of their birth certificate to confirm this.

4. Essay must be no more than 300 words long.

5. Contestants must compose an original essay with limited guidance from adults and teachers

Guidelines

1. Each entry must begin with a title page containing the title of the essay. Then, it must state the writer’s name, residential address, contact phone number, date of birth, school name, class and number of words.

2. Essays may be handwritten or typed in 12 point (times new roman), double-spaced.

3. Essays cannot be printed double-sided.

4. Essays must contain between 1500 & 2000 words for undergraduate level; less than 600 words for secondary level and less than 300 words for primary level. Every word of the essay is counted, but this does not include the bibliography, footnotes identifying non-original material, or title and author information.

5. Each page of the essay must be numbered starting with the first page of the essay, not the title page.

6. Any quotation or copyrighted materials used in the essay must be properly identified using a bibliography and footnotes for proper citation. Failure to identify non-original material will result in disqualification.

7. No reference can be made in the essay that will identify the entrant beyond the listing of the personal details on the title page.

9. Printed entries must be stapled together in the upper left-hand corner with title page on top. Covers of any type are not accepted beyond the title page information described in Section II, No. 1, above. NO BINDING PLEASE.

10. Each entry must be received latest by 4pm on Wednesday, 9th November 2012.

11. Each entry must be accompanied by a copy of the entrant’s photo ID, proof of college/school registration, full residential address, contact phone number and email address.

12. Entries must meet all the eligibility criteria.

13. The decision of the contest is final and no appeals will be recognized.

14. Failure to adhere to the rules may result in disqualification at the discretion of the judges.

15. All entries must be in the English language.

16. Judging will be by a panel of qualified markers/examiners as determined by the Glorious Islamic Centre.

17. Competition is open to Muslims resident in Nigeria only.

18. Only the winning entries in each category will be notified.

19. Winners will be notified by Monday, 10th December 2012

20. Any of the entries may be printed in publications of the Glorious Islamic Centre.

21. The judges reserve the right to withdraw prizes from any winners who may subsequently be deemed to have misrepresented themselves.

22. Glorious Islamic Centre reserves the right to substitute any of the advertised prizes.

23. Glorious Islamic Centre will not be responsible for any liabilities and losses resulting from participation in this competition.

Winners will be contacted by Monday, 10th December 2012. All winners will be invited to attend a public ceremony at the Glorious Islamic Centre, Plot 460 Adeniyi Jones Avenue, Ikeja on Sunday 16th December 2012.

24. The following are considered in scoring the Essay Competition:

A. Material Organization (logical interpretation of the subject, adherence to topic)

B. Vocabulary and Style (phrasing and continuity)

C. Grammar, Punctuation, Spelling.

25. Penalties for the Essay Competition include:

A. Failure to identify total number of words

B. Failure to stay within the word limit

C. Failure to double space

AES Engineering Solutions
Awarded on the basis of character, as determined by essays that are submitted. Scholarships are intended for our future leaders across a wide spectrum of fields of study. This award is available to high school seniors and all students attending a post secondary educational facility.
You are not required to be taking Engineering courses to be eligible.

Horatio Alger Canadian Scholarship Program
For students who have overcome adversity and succeed in life. Students must demonstrate financial needs ($55,000 or less annual net income per family), be involved in co-curricular and community activities, maintain a minimum average of 65%, and plan to pursue post-secondary studies.

Manitoba Forage Seed Association (MFSA)
Must be a member of, or have a parent who is a member of the Manitoba Forage Seed Association (MFSA) OR have a special interest in forage seed production. Student can be entering a diploma or degree program in Agriculture, and must have a 65% average (minimum).

The Arthur Paulin Automotive Aftermarket Scholarship Award
applicants must be enrolled in an automotive aftermarket industry related program or curriculum at a Canadian college or university.
This includes students pursuing their studies as an automotive apprentice.

Premier's Healthy Living Award for Youth
This award recognizes the achievements of young Manitobans who are positive role models for other children and yough.  Award applicants will have made an outstanding contribution to their school/community in one of the following areas: Active Living, Healthy Eating, Healthy Sexuality, Mental Health Promotion, Safety and Injury Prevention, Substance Use and Addictions, Tobacco Reduction.

TD Canada Trust Scholarships for Community Leadership
Students must have a minimum average of 75%, and have demonstrated outstanding community leadership.

Premier's Volunteer Service Award
To honour the efforts and dedication of outstanding volunteers in Manitoba.  There are three categories for nomination: Individual, Youth (under 25), and Community Groups.

YMCA-YWCA Women of Distinction: Prairie Award of Promise
This award will be made to a young woman, enrolled in a school outside the Winnipeg City limits, who will graduating from Grade 12. She has made a significant contribution to her school and community, has demonstrated scholastic achievement and shows promise of becoming a Woman of Distinction. She should be a role model for other young women.

RBC Students Leading Change Scholarships
Minimum of 70% average in grade 12 year, and pursuing post-secondary studies in Fall.

The Colonel Douglas H. Gunter Award
The Canadian War Museum is dedicated to the study of Canadian military history and the effects of war upon Canada and its people. Each year, the Museum sponsors a national history award competition for senior high school students, based on a historically significant event or theme.

The Keith Cooper Scholarship
For young people who have been cared for by any of the four Manitoba Child and Family Services Authorities.  Recipients may apply for the scholarship for an additional three years so that a student might complete a four-year university, technical or vocational program.

Manitoba Foundation for Sport Scholarships
Designed to support young athletes who continue to participate in amateur sport while pursuing a post-secondary education on a full time basis. Coaching Manitoba Bursary
For students who have demonstrated a commitment to coaching in Manitoba. Our goal is to encourage students to continue coaching while attending a post-secondary institution. Students who are, or will be, enrolled in the upcoming school term in post-secondary education and currently coaching for a school, club or community centre are invited to submit an application. One male and one female student from rural Manitoba will be selected to each receive a bursary to be used towards their tuition.
